Surface criteria
To write on a hard surface (stone, tile, concrete) a hard lead is required so the pencil does not wear off too quickly
A soft lead is useful on wood, so that pressing is not necessary and the wood is not damaged.
On moist surfaces, a special lead mixture is needed, as standard pencils will not write on this.
Usage criteria
Soft wood is required for easy and exact sharpening.
To keep the pencil from breaking and to protect the lead, harder wood is beneficial. |
